Agentic commerce: getting your store ready for AI shopping agents

Agentic commerce: getting your store ready for AI shopping agents

In 2025, the large AI companies started connecting their assistants to real checkouts. OpenAI introduced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT alongside an open Agentic Commerce Protocol developed with Stripe. Google announced an Agent Payments Protocol for agent-led payments. Shopping assistants that once only recommended products are beginning to complete purchases.

This is still early, and the details change month to month, so check the current status of each platform before you build anything. But the direction is clear, and the groundwork is the same whatever protocol wins.

What changes when an agent shops

A human skims photos and gets a feeling. An agent reads data. It compares exact specs, total price including shipping, delivery dates and return terms, and it picks the option that best matches the request. Vague product pages lose; precise ones win.

How an AI shopping agent buys
The store that wins is the one whose data the agent can read and trust.

How to get ready now

1. Clean, complete product data

  • Exact titles, specifications, variants and GTINs.
  • Stock levels that are accurate in real time.
  • Prices including tax and shipping that match everywhere.

2. A maintained product feed

Keep a Google Merchant Center feed in good health. Feeds are how most shopping surfaces read your catalogue today, and they’re the natural starting point for agent-facing integrations.

3. Machine-readable policies

Shipping costs, delivery times and return windows in structured data and in plain text on product pages. An agent can’t choose you if it can’t confirm when the order arrives.

4. A checkout that works without friction

Guest checkout, common wallets and payment methods, and no surprise fees at the last step. Agent checkouts will favour stores that complete cleanly.

5. Watch your platform

Shopify, WooCommerce, payment providers such as Stripe, and plugin vendors are adding agent and AI integrations. When your platform supports a protocol, turning it on will be much easier if your data is already clean.

What not to do yet

Don’t rebuild your store for a protocol that may change. Spend on the fundamentals above: they help with Google Shopping, AI answers and human shoppers today.
